How many years have in your profession? 13
What influenced you to choose your profession:
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be involved in agriculture. This passion was my driver when choosing a college and major. While I was in college, I learned about the different careers that crossed over with ag and my personal interests. After completing the associate training program and interacting with other appraisers at 1st Farm Credit, I decided the best route for me was working at an ag lender completing appraisals.
What do you enjoy about your profession?
My work is an ideal combination of book and practical knowledge. There is a lot of data and information about property sales that you can dig into. Understanding the best land use and soil types is something you can always learn from a book. There is a lot of on-the-job knowledge that you learn over time. I enjoy using these resources and combining them to work with clients to solve complex problems.
What do you see for the future of your profession?
Like everything these days, technology is advancing how we approach our work. Everything from historical databases to aerial mapping is impacting our work, but it will not replace the need for a person to analyze and review these materials. I see us leveraging technology to improve our efficiencies.
What is a suggestion you would give to a young person that is considering a career in your profession?
Find a good mentor or professor to help you understand how your personal skills and interest can combine into a fruitful, enjoyable career. Also, the agricultural and appraisal industry is a tight, well connected network of people. Making and maintaining these relationships are critical to your success both professionally and personally.
