Member Spotlight: Durkin Young

Background:
I grew up in Monmouth, Illinois. My grandfather and two uncles farmed corn/soybeans my entire childhood into young adult life. Their farm operation was between Good Hope and Roseville. My parents were cropland owners, both working their own small businesses. I graduated from the University of Illinois in 2009 with a BS in ag economics. I have been in my profession for 13 years. My wife, Courtney, and I have two daughters, Blakely (4.5) and Sloane (6 months). We have a 14-year-old dog, Moe, who spends every day with me, whether at the office, working from home, or inspecting property.

Hobbies/Interests:
I enjoy time with my daughters, and watching basketball and football on TV. I also enjoy golfing and playing cards, but not nearly as much as I used to.

Employer:
Compeer Financial

Role/Position:
Senior Certified Appraiser

What influenced you to choose your profession:
My father had an appraisal business of his own. I analyzed farm sales as a part time job in junior high and high school.

What do you enjoy about your profession?
I enjoy the process. Not every property is the same so it isn’t as repetitive as I think others view it.

What do you see for the future of your profession?
I anticipate more appraisals written with either algorithms or some form of mathematical modeling.

What suggestion would you give to a young person considering a career in your profession?
Take a lot of statistics courses.

Favorite inspirational quote:
“You wanna know which ring is my favorite? The next one.” Tom Brady.

Professional Affiliations:
My professional affiliations include a MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute, since 2015; Accredited Rural Appraiser, as designated by the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, since 2016; and Accredited Senior Appraiser – Real Property with the American Society of Appraisers, since 2018. I am also a member of ICAP.
